Membership in AIFD®

Interested in becoming a Certified Floral Designer (CFD®) with the ultimate goal of becoming an Accredited Member of the American Institute of Floral Designers®? We hope the following information will help you prepare for this wonderful career pursuit.

Enrolling as an AIFD Candidate

Enrolling as and AIFD® Candidate is the first step to membership. If you need the textbook be sure to select that option when enrolling. Each February, Candidates are sent a link to the Application to Participate in the upcoming Professional Floral Design Evaluation® (PFDE®) which includes an online and physical design evaluation. Once the application along with payment is submitted, a Candidate receives login credentials to the online exam. After successful completion of the online exam, which is based off The AIFD Guide to Floral Design, a Candidate can participate in the physical design evaluation, which takes place once a year during our National Symposium. The cumulative evaluation scores earned during the PFDE® determine if a Candidate receives the Certified Floral Designer designation and/or is invited to join AIFD® as an Accredited Member. Becoming an Accredited Member of AIFD®

Membership in AIFD® is selective and an individual must fulfill rigid qualifications and demonstrate advanced professional ability. After enrolling as an AIFD® Candidate, a Candidate must successfully complete the AIFD® Professional Floral Design Evaluation® (PFDE®) and in doing so, earn scores high enough to not only earn the coveted Certified Floral Designer (CFD®) designation, but also earn an invitation to join as an Accredited Member and uphold its mission to advance the art of professional floral design through education. Members of the American Institute of Floral Designers® are distinguished by the letters “AIFD” used as an addendum to their name. Becoming a Certified Floral Designer (CFD®)

Floral designers have two different options to earn the coveted Certified Floral Designer (CFD®) designation. The first is to enroll as an AIFD® Candidate, attend and receive a cumulative evaluation score of 16.0 or better in a Professional Floral Design Evaluation® (PFDE®). AIFD® also offers the opportunity to become a Certified Floral Designer (CFD®) through our Education Providers, which include Approved State Associations, AIFD® Education Partners and SAIFD Chapters. Each Education Provider has different courses and requirements to pass their program and a list of Education Partners can be found here. If you successfully complete their course and they deem that your work is at the level of a Certified Floral Designer, they submit your information to AIFD® and you are granted the opportunity to become a CFD®.
