What’s New

*The AIFD Membership Committee is hosting an AIFD Certified Evaluator Workshop on July 10. This 4:30 p.m. workshop, “Insight into Scoring,” is being held in Room Orchid A-D in the lower level of the Hyatt, and is presented by Kathy Whalen AIFD. This is open to all AIFD accredited members. We had previously stated that the three required online videos would be available to members to view prior to this date, however due to a few technical difficulties the videos will not be available until after symposium. For those attending the workshop, we will allow you to view the videos after this symposium. Attending this workshop still fulfills partial requirements for the certification process. You do not have to RSVP for this event in advance, just show up and be sure to sign in. If you have additional questions please contact AIFD Membership Chairperson, Joyce Mason-Monheim at jmmonheim@yahoo.com, otherwise we hope to see you there!

Hot designs…hot events…hot inspiration. From July 12-16, 2012 the leading floral designers in the world will take over the Hyatt Regency and show Miami something it’s never seen before. You don’t want to miss being a part of this event that is sure to make the record books. So, don’t wait…register today!

Back by popular demand, Dutchman Pim van den Akker, who ranks among the top international florists and designers, is scheduled to return to the design stage! His high energy and inspirational program from the 2011 Symposium drew a large crowd and he is sure to not disappoint in Miami.

The AIFD 2012 National Symposium “CALIENTE” will take place in the Hyatt Regency Miami Hotel (400 SE Second Ave, Miami, Fla., 33131). All activities will be held in the Hotel and in the James L. Knight Convention Center. AIFD has secured a limited room block at the hotel with the following rates:

Single – $149
Double – $174

How To Get There

Miami International Airport (MIA) is by far the closest airport; although you can fly into Ft. Lauderdale (FFL) (25 miles away). From MIA or FFL, you can either take a cab ($25-$35 from MIA or $80-$90 from FFL) or the Super Shuttle http://www.supershuttle.com They have shuttles staged at the airports and the cost to our hotel is $17.00 from MIA or $25 from FFL. For your return trip back to the airport, they require an advance reservation at least 24 hours in advance. Even though they have shuttles staged at the airport, it would be best for you to reserve that in advance as well.

Want to Volunteer?

Symposium is a major event that would be impossible to stage without the help of hundreds of volunteers. For many attendees, the time spent working as a volunteer is one of the most rewarding parts of their Symposium experience. If you’d like to volunteer, we’d love to have you. You do, however, need to be registered as a Full or Education Only attendee of Symposium in order to volunteer. Symposium Attire

“Caliente” will present to you the hottest ideas in floral design, but CALIENTE also means it’s hot in Miami in July, so dress appropriately. Remember, too, that the hotel and convention center are air conditioned. Proper attire for most Symposium programs is “comfortable business casual.” There are several events, however, where other clothing is more appropriate. Suggested attire for the Awards/Induction Dinner is cocktail dress and coat & tie.Suggested attire for the elegant Leadership Gala is Black Tie and Evening Gown. If you’re planning a visit to Miami Beach or South Beach, dress cool and comfortable.
